Hargeisa, Somaliland| Somaliland’s newly elected President, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fostering stronger diplomatic and economic ties with neighboring Ethiopia and Djibouti.

Speaking at a high-profile event in Hargeisa on Sunday, President Irro underscored the strategic importance of these relationships in advancing Somaliland’s economic development, security, and regional cooperation.

In his address, President Irro described Ethiopia as a vital partner with a shared history and mutual interests.

“Ethiopia is a long-standing friend and an indispensable partner in our efforts to drive economic growth, bolster security, and promote regional integration within Africa. Strengthening this relationship is crucial to realizing our vision of a prosperous and stable Somaliland,” he stated.

Ethiopia, which shares a lengthy border with Somaliland, has been a key player in fostering regional stability and facilitating trade. Somaliland’s Berbera port has emerged as a critical gateway for Ethiopian imports and exports, further cementing economic interdependence between the two entities.

Irro emphasized the need to expand this partnership, highlighting infrastructure development, trade facilitation, and collaborative security initiatives as priority areas.

Turning to Djibouti, President Irro acknowledged the recent challenges in Somaliland-Djibouti relations but expressed optimism about rebuilding trust and cooperation.

“We will work diligently to repair and strengthen our relationship with Djibouti. As neighbors with shared cultural and economic ties, our collaboration is essential for the stability and prosperity of the region,” he said.

President Irro also extended his vision of strengthened alliances beyond the Horn of Africa, noting the importance of Somaliland’s ties with the United States.

“The United States has shown significant interest in Somaliland, and we are eager to deepen our partnership in areas such as trade, investment, and security,” he remarked.

Observers view Irro’s statements as a promising indication of his administration’s focus on diplomacy and regional engagement.

Analysts note that improving relations with Ethiopia and Djibouti could enhance Somaliland’s push for international recognition while fostering economic opportunities and political stability.

As Somaliland navigates the challenges of regional politics and international diplomacy, President Irro’s commitment to reinforcing ties with key neighbors marks a pivotal step toward achieving the country’s broader strategic goals.
