Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has extended his gratitude to the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Italy for implementing a new wave of sanctions against Russia this week.
These measures, aimed at intensifying economic and political pressure on Moscow, were described by Zelenskyy as a “good sanctions strike” during his latest address.
Targeting Russia’s Oil Sector and Shadow Fleet
The President specifically highlighted the United States’ decision to target Russia’s oil sector.
This includes sanctions on the so-called “shadow tanker fleet,” a network of vessels allegedly used to circumvent existing restrictions on Russian oil exports.
Additionally, U.S. sanctions were imposed on companies such as Surgutneftegaz, a major oil producer often referred to as “Putin’s personal wallet.”
“These steps significantly restrict Russia’s ability to finance its aggression against Ukraine,” Zelenskyy stated, emphasizing the critical role of coordinated international actions in curbing Russian war efforts.
Pressure on the Russian Nuclear Industry
Zelenskyy also praised sanctions targeting officials from Rosatom, Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation.
He underscored the importance of holding the Russian nuclear industry accountable, particularly in light of the ongoing occupation of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant by Russian forces.
“The fact that the Zaporizhzhia plant remains a hostage under Russian control is a direct threat to global nuclear safety,” Zelenskyy warned.
He called for continued international pressure to ensure the plant’s return to Ukrainian authority and to mitigate risks of potential nuclear incidents.
A Call for Unified Action
This latest sanctions package follows a broader trend of international efforts to weaken Russia’s capacity to sustain its invasion of Ukraine.
