Uhuru Vocational Centre, located in the outskirts of Isiolo town is one of the few technical training institutes available in Isiolo.
Earlier in the afternoon, senior members of the Isiolo County government led by the chief officer of education Mr. Rashid Iribo arrived at the centre for assessment of various components of the newly commissioned institution.
The institution offers 7 critical courses such as ICT, electricals, masonry, beauty therapy, welding, tailoring & mechanics training. Catering courses will soon be rolled out at the institution.
The management of the institution had in the recent past made an appeal to the Safaricom Foundation for support in infrastructure. The institution, which is NITA-accredited houses about 216 students.
However, tutors and the management of the institution decried the congested learning spaces as one of the key challenges bedeviling the institution.
“From today’s assessment we confirmed that the greatest problem the institution has is the learning space for learners,” said Mr. Iribo upon assessment of the institution alongside members of the CRS and Safaricom Foundation.
The tutors and the management agreed that should the infrastructure of the institution be improved, the institution will have the capacity to admit more youth hence significantly improve the livelihoods of the local community especially the younger generation.
The Safaricom Foundation, having undertaken its own assessment donated a lump sum of Ksh. 10 million to be used for improvement in the infrastructure of the institution.
The construction of more classes will allow the institution to admit more students to undertake their studies comfortably.
