Government Declares Public Holiday for Deputy President Designate Kithure Kindiki’s Swearing-in Ceremony

The government has announced that Friday will be a public holiday to facilitate the swearing-in of Deputy President designate Kithure Kindiki.

Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi issued a gazette notice on Thursday evening confirming the holiday.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, and sections 3 (b) and 12 (3) of the Assumption of Office of President Act, declares Friday, November 1, 2024, to be a public holiday, being the date of the swearing-in of the Deputy President-designate,” reads the gazette notice.

Earlier, the government established a 21-member committee to oversee Kindiki’s swearing-in, following the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua.

In a separate gazette notice, Chief of Staff Felix Koskei appointed Secretary to the Cabinet, Mercy Wanjau, to lead this committee.

The committee includes Attorney General Dorcas Oduor, Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Winfridah Mokaya, and Principal Secretaries such as Julius Bitok (Citizen Services), Patrick Mariru (Defence), Raymod Omollo (Interior and Coordination), and Chris Kiptoo (Treasury).

Additional members are Principal Secretaries Korir Sangoei (Foreign Affairs), Edward Kiang’ani (Information and Broadcasting), Idris Dokota (Cabinet Affairs), Teresinh Mbaika (Devolution), Untmi Bashir (Culture), General Charles Kahariri, National Intelligence Services director Noordin Haji, and Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja.

“Whereas to facilitate the assumption to office of the deputy president-designate, the swearing-in of the deputy president-designate shall be undertaken by the assumption of the office of deputy president committee comprising members of the assumption of the office of president committee, with the necessary modifications as utility,” read part of the gazette notice.

Koskei noted that the formation of this committee followed a High Court ruling issued on Thursday afternoon, which lifted interim orders that had previously blocked Kindiki’s appointment and swearing-in.
