President William Ruto is gearing up for significant changes in his Cabinet as the political landscape shifts following the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Insiders have revealed that the anticipated changes aim to enhance Ruto’s collaboration with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and other allies, reflecting a broader approach to governance.
The recent developments indicate that Ruto may replace Gachagua’s loyalists in key Principal Secretary positions.
This move is seen as a strategic effort to stabilize the government in light of the recent political upheaval and to strengthen ties with the opposition, particularly the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) led by Odinga.
Currently, Kithure Kindiki, who was approved by Parliament to take over as Deputy President, is waiting for his swearing-in to be finalized. This process has been delayed due to Gachagua’s legal challenge against his impeachment.
Once Kindiki is officially in office, Ruto is expected to initiate a Cabinet reshuffle that will exclude Gachagua’s supporters and likely include more figures aligned with Raila’s ODM party.
The reorganization is particularly important as it comes at a time when the government is under scrutiny, and there are calls for a more inclusive leadership approach.
Ruto has reportedly delayed these changes until after the court resolves Gachagua’s situation, but the plan appears to be in place for a swift overhaul once Kindiki is sworn in.
Political analysts suggest that the fallout between Ruto and Gachagua has created a pressing need for a Cabinet revamp.
Alexander Nyamboga, a political expert, noted, “It’s only a matter of time before Ruto prepares a new-look government. Given the influence Gachagua and his allies had, Ruto must act quickly to reshape his administration.”
The reshuffle could create two vacancies in the Cabinet, as Kindiki will vacate his position as Interior Cabinet Secretary if he is appointed as Deputy President.
There is also an open slot in the Gender docket, which the National Assembly previously rejected. The ODM party, having already secured five Cabinet positions, is poised to benefit from this reshuffle.
If Ruto fulfills Raila’s demands, the total number of ODM members in the Cabinet could rise to six.
