Banisa, Mandera County| In the wake of a brutal attack that claimed six lives—including three children and a six-month-old infant—senior leaders from Mandera County visited the affected community on Friday to express their condolences, condemn the atrocity, and reaffirm their commitment to peace and justice.
The high-level delegation, led by Mandera Senator Ali Roba and Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif, toured Muruthow village in Banisa Constituency, where an extended family was viciously murdered in a nighttime raid on Wednesday.
The attack has shocked the nation and sparked widespread grief and outrage.
Accompanying the Senator and Governor were Members of Parliament from the region, Mandera County officials, top security commanders, and respected community elders.
Their visit was aimed at consoling bereaved families, de-escalating tension in the area, and assuring residents that justice will be served.
Addressing the grieving community, Senator Roba delivered a strong condemnation of the killings, describing the act as unjustifiable and inhumane.
“This heartbreaking event places a profound responsibility on our shoulders,” he said. “Had this been about drought, land, or natural resource disputes, we might understand. But there is no cause or justification for such senseless loss of life.”
Governor Khalif echoed the Senator’s sentiments, calling the massacre a stain on the conscience of the region and emphasizing that leaders must work tirelessly to ensure the perpetrators are held accountable.
“We are here not just as leaders, but as members of this community,” said the Governor.
“We grieve with you, and we will walk with you until justice is served. Security will be strengthened, and we will partner with national agencies to prevent further bloodshed.”
Mandera County Commissioner Henry Ochako confirmed the attack and assured the public that investigations are ongoing.
He noted that four survivors are currently receiving treatment at the Mandera County Referral Hospital and that their testimonies are crucial to unraveling the motive and identity of the attackers.
In response to the killings, security has been heightened across Banisa Constituency, with both local and national authorities urging residents to remain calm, cooperate with investigators, and refrain from retaliatory actions.
The massacre has reignited concerns about security in Mandera County, a region historically plagued by sporadic violence and lawlessness.
Leaders emphasized the importance of community cohesion and pledged to initiate long-term peace-building and conflict resolution strategies.
