Mombasa, Kenya| Senator Mohamed Faki has urged the Mombasa County Government to prioritize the completion of stalled development projects and improve service delivery to residents.

Speaking during a countywide oversight initiative, Senator Faki emphasized the need for accountability and efficiency in the implementation of devolved government projects.

The Senator, who chairs the County Oversight Committee, led a rigorous two-week evaluation tour across Mombasa’s six sub-counties—Jomvu, Mvita, Likoni, Changamwe, Kisauni, and Nyali.

This exercise aimed to assess the status of various county projects and identify key challenges hindering their progress.

At the conclusion of the oversight mission, Senator Faki presented an interim report to Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir.

The report highlighted critical issues, including the incomplete state of numerous projects initiated by the devolved government, as well as systemic challenges in the health sector.

“Many of the projects we inspected remain incomplete, despite their potential to significantly improve the quality of life for Mombasa residents,” Senator Faki stated.

“In Likoni, for instance, we found health centers such as Shonda that were started but are yet to be completed. These delays undermine public trust and hinder access to essential services.”

Health Sector Under Scrutiny

One of the primary areas of concern highlighted during the oversight exercise was the state of healthcare in Mombasa.

Several health centers were found to be grappling with persistent challenges, including:

Inadequate medical personnel: A shortage of doctors and healthcare workers has led to long waiting times and overburdened staff.

Incomplete infrastructure: Facilities like Shonda Health Center lack the necessary structural components, such as perimeter walls, to ensure security and operational efficiency.

Congestion: Overcrowding in existing health facilities has further strained the delivery of medical services.

These issues have left residents, particularly in underserved areas, struggling to access quality healthcare, a basic right guaranteed by the Constitution of Kenya.

Leveraging the Oversight Fund

Senator Faki acknowledged the support provided by the Oversight Fund, which is allocated to Senators to facilitate their role in monitoring county government activities.

“The Oversight Fund has enabled us to carry out this extensive evaluation and bring critical issues to light. It’s a vital tool for ensuring transparency and accountability in county operations,” he said.

The Senator called on the county government to fast-track the completion of stalled projects and implement measures to address the identified challenges.

He emphasized that the county administration has a duty to utilize public resources effectively and deliver tangible benefits to its citizens.

Governor Nassir, upon receiving the report, assured residents that his administration is committed to addressing the highlighted concerns.

He pledged to allocate additional resources and streamline processes to accelerate project completion and improve service delivery.

Be that as it may, the findings from the oversight exercise underscore the importance of continuous monitoring and evaluation to ensure that county governments fulfill their mandates.

Senator Faki expressed optimism that the collaboration between the Senate, the county government, and other stakeholders will lead to meaningful progress in addressing the gaps identified during the tour.

As Mombasa strives to solidify its position as a hub of economic and social development, the timely completion of critical projects and improvements in service delivery will play a pivotal role in enhancing the well-being of its residents.
