Marsabit: Student who breathes artificially passes with flying colours

The KCSE results for the year 2022 is finally out and so are Diba Matacho’s. The lad who has been confined to a hospital bed at the Marsabit Level 5 since 2018, and needed assistance purchasing a portable Oxygen concentrator in order to get out of the hospital bed and into the examination room, has passed with what can only be described as flying colours.

Matacho’s story went viral on social media and local and national media outlets following his appeal(through his doctor) to get a portable Oxygen generating machine. This is because he depended on the hospital’s immovable Oxygen generator for his bare survival.

His adversaries started way back in 2018 when, at Form Two, he contracted a form of Tuberculosis that led to his hospitalization.

He was successfully treated for the malady but he would soon realize that things would only get complicated after his lungs collapsed, a diagnosis that his doctors would attribute to the medication he was undergoing.

His doctors say that he(Matacho) would not survive more than ten minutes without the aid of an Oxygen concentrator. Coming from a humble background, it was impossible for Matacho to get his hands on a portable Oxygen concentrator.

We are reliably informed that a standard one goes for the upwards of Ksh 500K, a figure the family cannot even come close to affording.

The turn of events, with the mercy of doctors at the Marsabit Level 5 led by Dr. Liban Wako, forced Matacho to spend his time within the precincts of the four corners of the hospital; a luxury he wouldn’t have afforded were it not for the kindness of the facility’s staff.

However, following his highly publicised appeal, came along a benefactor in the form of Alamitu Jattani, the First Lady of Marsabit County, who, in partnership with a local charity availed one(a portable Oxygen generator) just in time to enable Matacho sit for his exams.

Matacho now has a reason to be hopeful in life having scored a B-, which is way above the University entry level grade which in the previous years has been pegged at C+.

We wish Matacho all the best in the years to come as he faces life, once more, with renewed hopes. We shall keep updating this story as we get more information coming in.
