Meet Sade Adu: The First Nigerian To Win A Grammy Award


Sade Adu (Born ‘Helen Fo̩las̩ade Adu’) is the first Nigerian ever to win a Grammy award.

Sade is the stage name of Helen Folasade Adu, CBE a Nigerian-born British singer, songwriter, and composer. She was born on January 16, 1959 in Ibadan O̩yo̩ state, Nigeria.

Her father was Adebisi Adu, an economics Professor at the University of Ibadan and mother Annes Hayes, a nurse.

Sade is the lead singer of the English band Sade, which she formed in London in 1982.

Sade is considered one of the most successful British female artists in history and is often recognized as an influence on contemporary music.

Sade may also refer to the English band Sade, which is named after their lead singer. Their debut album, Diamond Life, was released in 1984 and won the Brit Award for Best British Album in 1985.

All six of Sade’s albums have achieved platinum status in the U.K. and the US. One of the most successful British female artists in history, she is often recognised as an influence on contemporary music.

Her marriage to the Spanish film director Carlos Scola Pliego in 1989; her child’s birth in 1996, and her move from urban London to rural Gloucestershire, where she now lives with her partner, have consumed much of her time and attention.

She is also the most successful Solo Artiste in British history to have over 50 million sales with 110 music albums.
