Machakos, Kenya| Kenya has been plunged into mourning following the untimely demise of Colonel (Rtd) James Nguyo Gitahi, a highly respected retired military pilot and husband to nominated Senator Betty Batuli Montet.

Gitahi lost his life in a tragic road accident on March 5, 2025, at Kyumvi Junction along Mombasa Highway when his vehicle collided head-on with an oncoming lorry. The impact caused a devastating fire, leaving no chance of survival.

A Legacy of Excellence in Aviation

Col. Gitahi’s career in aviation spanned decades of dedicated service, making significant contributions to both military and civilian aviation.

He was a Kenya Air Force pilot, flying top government officials, including former Presidents Daniel arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki, between 1992 and 2010.

His skill, discipline, and unwavering commitment to duty earned him immense respect within the aviation community.

Even after retiring from the military, Gitahi remained devoted to his passion, transitioning into commercial aviation at Wilson Airport.

His expertise and mentorship were instrumental in shaping the careers of many young pilots, cementing his reputation as a dedicated professional who served Kenya with honor.

A Nation in Mourning: Tributes Pour In

Gitahi’s passing has left a deep void in the hearts of many, particularly his family, friends, colleagues, and leaders across the country.

His wife, Senator Betty Montet, delivered a moving tribute during a requiem mass held on March 14, 2025, at Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Kitisuru, Nairobi.

Recalling their time together, she described him as a humble, loving, and supportive partner.

“My Jay was a gentleman and lived his life as the humblest person I have ever known. He was my number one supporter, and we lived our life as one.” — Senator Betty Montet

His son, Junior, also paid tribute to his father, emphasizing the values he instilled in his children and the unwavering love he had for their mother.

“After 38 years of marriage, my father also taught us how to be a great husband. I know he adored my mother, and not even once did I hear him raise his voice toward her. He was dedicated to her and fully supported my mum’s projects. This mostly entailed him working hard every day, then giving my mum all the money. Clearly, this method seems to work.” — Junior, Gitahi’s son

Kenyan leaders and dignitaries joined the bereaved family in celebrating the life of the fallen pilot.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi acknowledged Gitahi’s distinguished service to the nation, both in the military and as a civilian aviator.

“Col. Nguyo, who rendered distinguished military service to our country, will also be remembered for his passion and exceptional work as a pilot, which saw him fly leaders among them former Presidents Daniel arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki and mentoring many upcoming pilots. We continue to pray for Hon. Montet and her entire family following this immense loss.” — Senate Speaker Amason Kingi

Senator Jackson Mandago also expressed his condolences, describing Gitahi as an outstanding patriot who served Kenya with honor.

“This evening, we stood with our colleague Senator Betty Montet in mourning the tragic loss of her husband, Col. (Rtd) James Gitahi, a distinguished pilot who served Kenya with honor. Our heartfelt condolences to her and the family during this difficult time.” — Senator Jackson Mandago

Among those who mourned Gitahi was musician Samidoh, who had a close personal connection with the late colonel.

“Today I celebrate a man I have so much respect for. A humble man full of wisdom. A man who took me as his own, not because he had to, but because he chose to.” — Samidoh

A Final Farewell

Gitahi’s funeral was held on March 15, 2025, at the family’s home in Maanzoni, Machakos County.

The solemn ceremony was attended by family, friends, and high-profile leaders, including former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who offered words of comfort and support to the grieving family.

The aviation community, in particular, has expressed deep sorrow at the loss of a seasoned pilot whose contributions to the field were unparalleled.

His dedication to his craft, mentorship of younger pilots, and commitment to service will forever be remembered.

A Nation Bids Goodbye to a Hero

Col. (Rtd) James Nguyo Gitahi’s tragic passing is a reminder of the fleeting nature of life, but his legacy as a skilled aviator, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a patriot will live on.

As Kenya mourns, it also celebrates the life of a man who soared the skies and touched the lives of many with his kindness, professionalism, and humility.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
