Zerihun Wadajo’s body arrives in Ethiopia, set for a ‘hero’s send off’

Addis Ababa| Zerihun Wadajo, who died on Saturday April 22 while receiving treatment in India is set to be given a ‘hero’s send-off’ according to reports published by the Addis Standard which is one of the most widely circulated newspapers in Ethiopia.

The body of the late artist arrived in Ethiopia on April 25 according to information that ICBNews has gathered from a number of sources.

Mr. Wadajo’s artistic career spans nearly a half a century and is regarded as one of Oromia region’s most celebrated artists. He will also be remembered fondly particularly by the Oromo community for his tireless efforts in activism and highlighting of the Oromo struggle to the world.

His choice of career path hasn’t sat well with previous Ethiopian administrations which led to his incarceration on a numerous occassion.

Key figures from Oromia and beyond have paid tribute to the late artist describing him as a selfless man who put the Oromo struggle before his own welfare. Shimellis Abdisa, who is the President of the Oromia regional government has promised to give the late artist a befitting send-off while celebrating him as a beacon of the Oromo community.

Others who have paid tribute to Mr. Wadajo are among others Jawar Mohamed, a member of parliament and a key opposition figure in Ethiopia. He described Mr. Wadajo as the “voice of hope for the Oromo people whose legacy will never be forgotten.”
