Nakuru, Kenya| Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Programmes, Geoffrey Ruku, has reiterated the Kenyan government’s commitment to fostering an inclusive, transparent, and responsive public service system.

Speaking during a spot check on service delivery at the Rift Valley Regional Commissioner’s grounds in Nakuru, Ruku emphasized the critical role of citizen feedback in shaping effective governance and urged public servants to prioritize the public good over personal interests.

A Commitment to Public Participation and Accountability

Ruku underscored the government’s dedication to public participation, noting that feedback from Kenyans is a cornerstone of policy formulation and service delivery improvements.

“The government takes feedback from Kenyans seriously, which is why we place great importance on public participation,” he stated.

This approach aligns with Article 232 of the Kenyan Constitution, which emphasizes equity, accountability, and citizen involvement as core principles of public service.

During his address to civil servants and members of the public in Nakuru, Ruku called for humility and dedication among public officers.

“Public officers must always carry out their duties with humility and prioritize the public good over personal interests,” he said.

His remarks come as part of ongoing efforts to reform the public service sector, aiming to enhance efficiency, transparency, and public trust in government institutions.

Addressing Public Service Challenges

Ruku acknowledged persistent challenges within the public service, including delayed promotions and limited career growth opportunities for civil servants.

He assured the audience that the government is actively working to address these issues to create a motivated and equitable workforce.

“We are committed to resolving challenges facing public servants to ensure a fair and motivated workforce that delivers quality services to all Kenyans,” he said.

The Cabinet Secretary’s spot check in Nakuru involved assessing service delivery across various government offices, highlighting the government’s proactive approach to monitoring and improving public services.

These efforts are part of broader reforms aimed at streamlining operations, reducing bureaucratic inefficiencies, and ensuring that public services are accessible to all citizens without bias.

A Call for Dialogue Over Protests

In a separate address on Sunday at Iriamurai Catholic Church in Mbeere South Constituency, Ruku appealed to Kenya’s youth, particularly Generation Z, to reconsider planned demonstrations scheduled for Wednesday.

He emphasized that street protests are not a sustainable solution to the country’s challenges, citing past protests that led to the destruction of property, infrastructure, and public amenities without resolving underlying issues.

“This only takes the country backward. We have one Kenya, one government—no region belongs to the opposition or the government,” Ruku stated, advocating for unity and constructive dialogue.

He reassured the youth that the government is aware of their concerns, particularly regarding unemployment, and is working tirelessly to address them. “We are listening, and we are committed to finding solutions through engagement rather than confrontation,” he added.

Building a Responsive Public Service

Ruku’s remarks reflect a broader vision for a public service that is responsive to the needs of all Kenyans. By emphasizing professionalism, adherence to constitutional values, and continuous engagement with citizens, the government aims to rebuild trust and deliver services that meet the expectations of a diverse population.

The Cabinet Secretary’s call for dialogue and his focus on public participation resonate with Kenya’s ongoing efforts to strengthen governance and foster national unity.

As the government continues to implement reforms, Ruku’s leadership in the Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Programmes docket will play a pivotal role in shaping a more inclusive and efficient public sector.
