In the sun-scorched landscapes of Turkana County, where prolonged drought has tested the endurance of pastoral communities, a vital intervention is bringing renewed hope to thousands.
The county government has successfully registered approximately 2,000 drought-affected families for a targeted cash transfer programme specifically designed to strengthen food security and ease immediate hardships.
This comprehensive relief effort extends beyond households, reaching the next generation through the distribution of essential food aid to 10 schools in the Suguta and Lokori Kochodin areas.
By supporting school feeding programmes, the initiative helps ensure that children receive vital nutrition, allowing them to stay focused on their education even as families struggle with scarce resources.
Partnerships Powering the Response
Patrick Losike, County Executive for Public Service, Administration, and Disaster Management, highlighted the strong collaboration driving the programme forward.
He confirmed that the Kenya Red Cross stands as a key development partner, working hand in hand with the county government to deliver timely and effective drought response measures.
Rukia Abubakar, Regional Coordinator for Kenya Red Cross Turkana, provided further insight into the well-orchestrated approach.
All activities were carefully aligned through the County Steering Group, a mechanism created to eliminate duplication and optimise limited resources.
“We were mapped to cover Suguta and Lokori Kochodin, while other partners focused on other hotspots,” she explained. This coordinated strategy has allowed for seamless coverage across the county’s most severely impacted zones.
The on-ground exercise went deeper than distribution alone. Teams conducted detailed assessments of emerging needs, painting a clear picture of the ongoing crisis.
Abubakar stressed that conditions remain extremely serious, with both people and livestock continuing to face grave threats from water shortages and depleted pastures.
Community Leaders Praise Fair and Transparent Targeting
Local authorities have warmly commended the joint efforts of the county government and Kenya Red Cross for their inclusive and transparent methods.
Area Chief Ekiru Alokas specifically lauded the close partnership with community members, which ensured that aid reached those who needed it most.
Vulnerable groups, including widows, orphans, the elderly, and persons with disabilities, received priority during the registration process, reflecting a strong commitment to equity and compassion.
Chief Alokas noted that the community-driven selection process built trust and ownership, making the programme more effective and sustainable.
Families enrolled in the cash transfer scheme can now access funds to purchase food, basic supplies, and other essentials, offering a measure of dignity and choice during one of the toughest periods in recent memory.
Urgent Calls for Expanded Support
While residents and leaders have welcomed the relief with gratitude, many are urging swift expansion to address the full scale of the emergency.
Calls are growing louder for an increase in the number of beneficiary households and for the inclusion of animal feed in future assistance packages.
For Turkana’s pastoralist families, livestock represents far more than income, it is the foundation of their entire way of life.
Supporting animal health and survival is therefore essential to preventing deeper livelihood collapse.
Building Lasting Resilience in Arid Regions
This drought relief programme in Turkana County forms part of wider national and county strategies to strengthen social protection systems in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands.
By blending immediate cash support, school feeding, and careful planning for future needs, the initiative delivers both urgent relief and a foundation for longer-term recovery.
As climate variability continues to challenge vulnerable regions across East Africa, such collaborative, community-centred responses demonstrate how targeted action can help households weather the storm and gradually rebuild their resilience.
The people of Turkana now look forward to sustained partnership that will not only tackle today’s crisis but also prepare the county for a more secure and stable tomorrow.
