Isiolo, Kenya| In a powerful display of community solidarity and cultural pride, Isiolo Governor Abdi Ibrahim Hassan affectionately known as Governor Guyo headlined the annual Sakuye Cultural Night on Saturday with the event recording great success.
Speaking as the guest of honour, Governor Guyo delivered an impassioned plea for unity ahead of the upcoming political season while issuing a stern warning to politicians attempting to sow division and demanding stronger measures against escalating insecurity and cattle rustling.
The colorful event, held under the starlit skies of Isiolo and attended by hundreds of Sakuye elders, youth, women, and leaders, showcased traditional dances, songs, and exhibitions that celebrated the rich heritage of the Sakuye community—one of Isiolo County’s key pastoralist groups.
Amid the rhythmic beats of drums and vibrant attire, Governor Guyo was accorded a heroic welcome, underscoring his growing stature as a unifying figure in the region.
Rallying Behind Loyalty and Development
Taking to the podium, Governor Guyo expressed profound gratitude to leaders who have steadfastly supported the Sakuye community during challenging times.
He singled out Isiolo Woman Representative Mumina Bonaya for special praise, highlighting her unwavering loyalty when others allegedly turned away.
“Mumina Bonaya stood with us when everyone abandoned us—even when our own sister deserted us,” Governor Guyo declared. “I therefore urge all Sakuye to give Mumina Bonaya 100% of your votes so she can secure a second term. Anyone who does not vote for Mumina Bonaya is someone who is not voting for me.”
The governor also recognized former Isiolo Governor Godana Doyo—now vying for the county’s Senate seat—as well as other local leaders committed to development and community welfare.
His remarks were met with thunderous applause, reinforcing alliances as the 2027 general elections draw nearer.
A United Community Cannot Be Divided
In a direct message to potential political agitators, Governor Guyo asserted that the Sakuye people are more cohesive than ever, rendering any attempts at division futile.
“The Sakuye community is more united than ever before, and those attempting to divide us for cheap political mileage will not succeed,” he warned, earning cheers from the crowd.
The statement comes against the backdrop of Kenya’s often fractious ethnic and clan-based political landscape in pastoralist counties, where alliances can shift rapidly.
Observers note that Governor Guyo’s emphasis on unity is strategic, aimed at consolidating Sakuye support as competition for regional influence intensifies.
Urgent Call for Security Intervention
Turning to pressing security concerns, Governor Guyo expressed deep frustration over recent spikes in cattle rustling—even in Isiolo town center—and a series of violent incidents that have claimed lives and eroded public trust in law enforcement.
He criticized perceived lapses in security response and urged agencies to adopt a more proactive, intelligence-led approach to preempt crimes rather than merely reacting after the fact.
“We cannot continue losing lives and livestock while security organs watch from the sidelines,” the governor stated. “Perpetrators must be apprehended decisively, and preventive measures implemented immediately to restore confidence among our people.”
Cattle rustling remains a perennial challenge in northern Kenya, often exacerbated by drought, proliferation of small arms, and inter-community rivalries.
Recent incidents in Isiolo have heightened tensions, with residents reporting brazen daylight raids that disrupt livelihoods and fuel retaliation cycles.
Voices of Support
Isiolo County Assembly Speaker Abdullahi Banticha echoed the governor’s sentiments, reaffirming the community’s solid backing.
“We know the strength of Governor Guyo, and that is why we always stand behind him,” Speaker Banticha told the gathering. “You too should stand firm with your son—he is strong and delivers for the people.”
Commitment to Culture and Empowerment
Beyond politics and security, the Sakuye Cultural Night served as a platform for Governor Guyo to reiterate his administration’s dedication to preserving indigenous heritage while fostering peace-building initiatives and economic empowerment.
Cultural events like these play a vital role in strengthening social bonds among pastoralist communities and providing youth with pride in their identity—factors experts say are essential for long-term stability in regions prone to conflict.
As Isiolo navigates the delicate balance between tradition and modernity, Governor Abdi Guyo’s appearance at the cultural night has solidified his image as a leader deeply rooted in his people’s aspirations—championing unity, cultural preservation, and security at a critical juncture.
With the political temperature rising countywide, Saturday’s gathering sent a clear message: the Sakuye community, under Governor Guyo’s leadership, intends to remain a united and formidable force.
