Isiolo, Kenya| In a powerful display of communal unity and respect for legacy, elders from the Borana and Sakuye communities in Isiolo County have unanimously endorsed 36-year-old Tubi Mohamed Tubi – popularly known as “Young Tupi” – as the preferred candidate to succeed his late father, Hon. Tubi Bidu Mohamed, the former Member of Parliament for Isiolo South Constituency.
The endorsement marks a poignant new chapter in the region’s politics, blending tradition, continuity, and intergenerational leadership amid grief.
The historic decision came during a solemn yet celebratory gathering on November 16, 2025, at the late MP’s residence in Isiolo, just days after Hon. Tubi Bidu Mohamed was laid to rest following his passing on November 12, 2025, after a prolonged illness at a Nairobi hospital.
The event, described by attendees as a “crowning” ceremony, saw Young Tupi adorned in traditional attire – a white kanzu, hat, and shawl – symbols typically reserved for revered community elders selected for leadership roles.
A United Front from Borana and Sakuye Leaders
The endorsement was led by prominent figures from both the dominant Borana community and the influential Sakuye clan, underscoring cross-community solidarity in Isiolo South.
Borana Council of Elders Chairman Mohammed Konso Hallo declared Tubi Mohamed Tubi the “sole flag-bearer” for the impending by-election, emphasizing that the decision was reached through overwhelming consensus.
“For continuity of leadership and in honour of our departed elder brother, the best person to complete the remainder of the term is none other than Tubi Mohamed Tubi,” Hallo stated, highlighting the community’s desire to honor the late MP’s contributions while ensuring uninterrupted development.
He was strongly supported by key Borana clan leaders, including Jima clans Chairman Mohamed Ali Mudale and secretary general Ahmed Wako Happi, as well as Sakuye representatives Hassan Balla and Mohamed Guyo, both former councillors.
This joint backing from Borana and Sakuye elders – groups that have historically shaped political outcomes in the pastoralist-dominated region – signals a unified bloc poised to rally behind the young heir.
The gathering drew elders from all Borana clans, Sakuye delegates, Gabra and Somali representatives, professionals, and women’s groups, reflecting broad-based support beyond tribal lines.
Young Tupi’s Background and Readiness to Lead
Tubi Mohamed Tubi, a father of two and a successful businessman operating between Isiolo and Nairobi, brings a blend of youth, education, and hands-on experience to the table.
He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Zetech University and has been deeply involved in constituency affairs, working closely alongside his father for years.
Speaking at the endorsement event, an emotional Young Tupi expressed profound gratitude to the Isiolo communities for their unwavering support during the family’s time of mourning.
“I am deeply thankful to the people of Isiolo South for standing with us in our grief,” he said. “I am fully prepared to take over and continue exactly from where my father left off.”
He assured residents of his commitment to upholding his father’s legacy, pledging renewed energy and effective service.
“Having worked side-by-side with him on constituency matters, I have gained invaluable experience that equips me to lead with confidence and dedication,” Young Tupi added, vowing to prioritize education bursaries, infrastructure, and wildlife conservation – causes close to his father’s heart.
Honoring a Dedicated Legacy
The late Hon. Tubi Bidu Mohamed, elected in 2022 on a Jubilee Party ticket, was remembered as a humble, transformative leader with a rich background in public service.
Before entering Parliament, he served as the inaugural Speaker of the Isiolo County Assembly (2013–2017) and had a distinguished career in wildlife conservation, including roles as Chief Game Warden in Samburu, Maasai Mara, and Isiolo parks.
In Parliament, he sat on the Departmental Committee on Environment, Forestry and Mining, as well as the Public Petitions Committee, championing issues like environmental protection and constituency development.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula eulogized him as a “dedicated and hardworking legislator” whose final contributions focused on insecurity in his area.
His sudden demise has triggered an upcoming by-election, with the seat expected to be declared vacant soon by the Speaker and a date set by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Tradition of Family Succession in Kenyan Politics
This endorsement aligns with a growing trend in Kenyan politics, particularly in northern and pastoralist regions, where elders endorse family members of deceased leaders to ensure project continuity and community stability.
Historical precedents in Isiolo and neighboring counties, such as brothers succeeding fallen MPs in the 1980s, have proven successful. Recent national examples include children of late legislators contesting and winning by-elections.
Elders emphasized that supporting Young Tupi would best safeguard the late MP’s unfinished projects until the 2027 General Election, after which the seat would open to broader competition.
What Lies Ahead for Isiolo South
With this powerful endorsement, Tubi Mohamed Tubi enters the political spotlight carrying a message of unity, continuity, and devoted service.
As Isiolo South – a constituency rich in cultural diversity and natural resources – prepares for the by-election, all eyes are on whether this traditional consensus will translate into electoral success, potentially setting a precedent for harmonious leadership transitions in multi-ethnic Kenya.
The people of Isiolo South now look to Young Tupi to build on his father’s foundation, fostering peace, development, and prosperity in a region long shaped by clan dynamics and pastoralist traditions.
As one elder put it: “This is not just about a seat; it’s about honouring our past while securing our future.”
This development continues to evolve; stay tuned for updates on the official by-election timeline and potential challengers.
