Kiambu County, Kenya| Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi has reportedly been abducted by unidentified individuals in a brazen daylight incident, just 48 hours after he narrowly escaped a similar attempt.

The lawmaker was taken on Sunday, May 25, in front of congregants during a church service at Full Gospel Church in Mugutha, Kiambu County.

According to multiple eyewitness accounts, Koimburi had reappeared at the church following days of disappearance, amid swirling speculation about a previous abduction attempt.

His sudden reappearance was short-lived, however, as armed men — described by locals as plainclothes officers — forcibly seized him from the church compound and bundled him into a Subaru vehicle.

In a dramatic and chaotic scene, Koimburi’s wife, popularly known as Mama Shiru, sustained injuries while attempting to prevent the abduction.

Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa confirmed her injuries, noting that she was manhandled and dragged away after pleading to be taken alongside her husband.

“The men were dressed like civilians but acted like law enforcement officers,” said one churchgoer. “They moved swiftly, ignored our screams, and left with the MP despite the chaos.” This marks the second time within a week that Koimburi has been targeted.

The previous attempt reportedly occurred near the Juja flyover, where he managed to flee on a motorcycle after a bursary disbursement event and the handover of a new laboratory facility in the constituency.

That incident, though less public, raised alarm among supporters and political observers.

The identity and motives of the abductors remain unclear. While no official statement has been issued by national police authorities or investigative agencies, some local leaders have linked the incidents to growing political tensions.

The abduction has sparked public outrage, with some opposition figures decrying what they term as “state intimidation.”

“No amount of state intimidation will stop the Wan Tam movement,” a defiant statement read from individuals close to Koimburi, in reference to a growing political faction within the Mt. Kenya region that has challenged elements within the current administration.

The audacity of the abduction — executed in broad daylight, in front of worshippers, and without immediate intervention by security authorities — has deepened concerns about the rule of law and the safety of elected leaders in the country.

Local residents and clergy have condemned the incident and called for immediate government action. “This was a violation not just of one man, but of the sanctity of worship and the safety of every citizen,” said a church elder who witnessed the scene.

As of Monday morning, the whereabouts of MP Koimburi remain unknown, and his family is demanding his immediate release and accountability from relevant government institutions.

The unfolding drama continues to raise serious questions about political freedom, human rights, and the limits of state power in Kenya’s increasingly charged political landscape.

This is a developing story. More updates to follow.
