Tirunesh Dibaba conferred with coveted military honours

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia| Celebrated track legend Tirunesh Dibaba has been recognized by the Ethiopian government for her incredible achievements on and off the track.

Dibaba who is a winner of multiple world championships and Olympic competitions in addition to being a hold of multiple world records has been conferred with highest military honours by the government in recognition for her successes.

Tirunesh who comes from a family of athletes stunned the world when she scooped an Olympic double in the 2008 Beijing Olympics effortlessly taking both the 5000M and 10000M olympic titles making her the first African to achieve such a milestone in a single Olympic competition.

The government promoted her to the position of Chief Superintendent. She will now be honourably referred to as “Commander athlete” as she gets a role on the Ethiopian Athletics Board where she will be deputizing her legendary cousin Commander Derartu Tullu.

While unconfirmed, we believe her husband, athlete Sileshi Shin has also been conferred with honours alongside her. See photos from the event as it happened below.

Tirunesh who has now switched to Marathon races is set to come back to competitions after taking a maternal hiatus. The athletic superstar welcomed her third child with athlete hubby Sileshi Shin a year ago.
