•A Rising Star in Northern Kenya’s Music Scene
Early Life and Education
Rufo Jirma Boru, popularly known by her stage name Rufas Tiya, was born in Sololo, a small but scenic township nestled in the hills of Marsabit County, Northern Kenya.
Despite her early years in Sololo, her family relocated to Nairobi when she was still a child.
Growing up in the capital city provided her with better educational opportunities, and she successfully completed her ‘O’ levels there.
Journey into the Arts
After high school, Rufas discovered her passion for the arts and began exploring the entertainment industry. Initially, she pursued comedy, showcasing her wit and humor.
However, she later transitioned to music—a field where she found her true calling. Her exceptional talent and unique musical style quickly set her apart, propelling her to prominence, particularly in Northern Kenya.
Musical Career and Achievements
Rufas Tiya predominantly sings in Afaan Oromoo, a Cushitic language widely spoken in Marsabit, Isiolo, Mandera, and Wajir counties.
Her ability to blend traditional melodies with modern influences has endeared her to a broad audience. Some of her most popular songs include:
- Simu Teh D’abe Innolin

Through her music, Rufas has played a significant role in promoting the cultural heritage of the Oromo-speaking communities in Kenya.
Her songs resonate with many, as they often carry deep social, cultural, and emotional themes.
Challenges and Resilience
In September of this year, Rufas faced a major setback when her YouTube channel, which had rapidly amassed 17,000 subscribers in less than a year, was hacked.
Losing such a substantial following was a significant blow, but it also demonstrated the extent of her influence in the entertainment industry.
Despite this challenge, she has remained determined to rebuild her presence and continue engaging her loyal fans.
